'La casa de Bernarda Alba' by Federico García Lorca will be performed in Spanish, with surtitles in English.
‘La casa de Bernarda Alba’ was Lorca’s final, and arguably best, play and was completed in 1936 just months before his assassination at the hands of the Francoist forces during the outbreak of the Spanish civil war.
It tells the story of a mother intent on controlling her five daughters during a restrictive eight year period of mourning for their father. Only one of the daughters, Angustias, is deemed eligible for marriage and finds a handsome suitor in Pepe el Romano. However, Pepe has eyes for one of her sisters, Adela, with tragic repercussions.
In typical Lorcian fashion, the play is steeped in Andalusian culture and tradition and highlights the repressive role of women in early 20th century rural Spain.
The play is performed by Badminton Spanish students who also study this text as part of their A Level course.
